Language development
Language development begins from birth. Even before speaking, children learn to understand sounds, gestures, and expressions. As they grow, they begin forming words, creating sentences, and expressing ideas. By two, most children can form simple phrases, and by three, they are speaking in short sentences.
Language includes understanding (receptive language) and expressing thoughts (expressive language). Some children struggle with one or both, making it hard to follow instructions, express themselves, or join conversations. Early intervention is crucial to support their development and prevent challenges in learning and social interactions.
Listening and processing
Listening is the foundation of learning language. Children need to process what they hear to understand, remember, and respond. This skill, called auditory processing, is vital for learning concepts, following directions, and engaging socially.
Some children struggle with processing information, leading to difficulties understanding questions or following instructions. At iThrive Health, our Speech Pathologists identify these challenges early, providing targeted therapy to strengthen listening and processing skills.
Building social communication
Language is more than words, it’s about connecting with others. Social communication involves understanding body language, taking turns, and expressing thoughts appropriately. Children with language difficulties may find it challenging to interact with peers or express emotions effectively.
Our Speech Pathologists help children develop these skills through interactive play and structured learning, making it easier for them to communicate confidently and engage with others.
